WESTERLY WAVES

Here is a selection of the best beaches on the west coast of the island.

Mount Lavinia Beach

Mount Lavinia is for those of you who cannot get away from Colombo during your holiday. Parents may be averse to the weekend crowd but children are sure to be attracted to the bustle.

Negombo

The beach in Negombo used to be devoid of any charm until some time ago the authorities cleaned up the place and made it more hospitable to tourists. There is a string of hotels of all sizes along the beach that offer all amenities you require.

Chilaw

A warm sandy beach with an active fishing community that offers peace and tranquillity to travellers. Try popping into the local fish market if you are around here.

Kalpitiya

The beach in Kalpitiya is a hit among tourists in search of quality isolation and tranquil freedom. Only the sound of waves and the chirping of birds can distract you from the splendid intake of nature the place provides during the best tourist season. Kalpitiya is one of the best spots to spot dolphins.

Kalutara

Kalutara is endowed with an unspoilt beach, swaying coconut trees and excellent swimming possibilities. If you are going southwards from the Colombo international airport or getting back to the airport from the south, Kalutara can be either you first or last beach-centred halt.

Bentota

Some 60km south of Colombo, Bentota is a favourite spot for those who love water sports. Despite the crowd, the place is tidy. There is also a choice of other beaches close by where you can go should you feel the necessity of wandering away. Bentota is a great place to dive if you are on the island between November and May. Hotels here generally have a pool. So, if the sea is choppy, you have an alternative. The Sea Turtles Conservation Project a must for anyone who stops by Bentota.

Induruwa

A small fishing village stretching along a small creek, the sandy beach at Induruwa is ideal for long walks, sun bathing and swimming. The lack of crowds, even during the peak season, makes this spot a quality halt for those looking to relax the mind and the body.

Beruwela

The barrier reef that protects the shore makes swimming in Beruwela safe even for kids, provided they are under adult supervision. Quite a few luxury guesthouses with great ocean-views and ayurveda resorts are to be found here.

Aluthgama

Situated between Bentota and Beruwela, Aluthgama is an authentic place for those in search of tranquillity and a bit of isolation.

Hikkaduwa

A marvellous town with a reputation among surfers around the world. Hikkaduwa is also great for snorkelling especially in the northern end where you can easily spot marine turtles and corals. The town offers good shopping opportunities too. The Beach festival in July is a non-stop party for 4 days with concerts and competitions of all kinds.
